I am trying to understand who God is according to Scripture. the Bible says God is one, yet many teach that He is Three Persons. How can this be? Is this teaching clearly found in the Bible?
Answer:
At What Saith The Scripture, we begin with one question:
“What saith the Scripture?” (Romans 4:3).
The Bible declares that Gd is one. The question is not what tradition says, but what the scripture reveals.
This one God has revealed Himself as Father, Spirit, and in Jesus Christ, who is God manifested in the flesh.
What the Scripture says
Deuteronomy 6:4 – “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD.”
Isaiah 44:6 – “I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.”
1 Timothy 3:16 – “God was manifest in the flesh.”
Colossians 2:9 – “For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.”
Jesus and the Father
John 10:30 – “I and my Father are one.”
John 14:9 – “He that hath seen me hath seen the Father.”
Isaiah 9:6 – “…his name shall be called… The mighty God, The everlasting Father…”
These passages show that Jesus is not separate from God, but is the visible manifestation of the one God.
The Spirit of God
John 4:24 – “God is a Spirit.”
2 Corinthians 3:17 – “Now the Lord is that Spirit.”
The Spirit is not a separate God, but God Himself in His invisible nature.
One Lord
Ephesians 4:5 – “One Lord, one faith, one baptism.”
Acts 2:36 – “God hath made that same Jesus… both Lord and Christ.”The same LORD revealed in the Old Testament is fully revealed in Jesus Christ.
Understanding the question of “Trinity”
The word “Trinity” is not found in Scripture.
Neither does the Bible use the phrase “three persons in one God.”
Because of this, every doctrine must be tested by the question:
👉 “What saith the scripture?” (Romans 4:3)
Conclusion
The Scripture teaches:
- There is One God
- God is Spirit (invisible)
- God was manifest in the flesh in Jesus Christ
Scripture reveals one God – not divided into three persons – but fully revealed in Jesus. The answer must come from the Word of God, not from traditions of men. Therefore, we understand God, to be the Creator of the heaven and earth, the Spirit, His invisible nature, and He is the Son, His manifestation in a bodily form. God is One – revealed in different ways—yet always one.
