I want to understand who God is according to the Bible. How does Scripture describe His nature, character, and who He is? What does the Bible reveal about God?
Answer:
According to the Bible, God is the Creator of heaven and earth. The name “God” is His functional name. He is Spirit, meaning that He is invisible to the natural eye. He is revealed as the Son of God, referring to the body He took on in order to be visible to man—Invisibility made visible. He created all things within time, yet He exists outside the spectrum of time, having neither beginning nor ending.
Scripture describes God as:
• Creator – “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1; Revelation 4:11) • Spirit – “God is Spirit” (John 4:24; see also Genesis 1:2; Colossians 1:15–16; 1 Timothy 1:17; Hebrews 11:27)
• One – “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one” (Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 43:10; Isaiah 44:6; 1 Timothy 1:17)
• Eternal – “For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy” (Isaiah 57:15)
• Holy / Faithful / True – The term “holy” is given further understanding in Exodus 29:37: “…whatsoever toucheth the altar shall be holy.” Here, holiness is shown as dedication—faithfulness and truth. Therefore, God is Holy, that is, Faithful and True. He is completely dedicated and unchanging in His nature (Isaiah 6:3; Exodus 29:37; Revelation 19:11).
• Loving – “God is love” (1 John 4:8)
• Just – Righteous and fair in all His ways (Deuteronomy 32:4)
Conclusion
In the New Testament, God is revealed more fully as Father, Son (Jesus Christ), and Holy Spirit—yet still one God. (Mathew 28:19, Acts 2:38, John 10:30, Acts 5:3,4)
